I don't know about fatigue, but I wear chaps when it's cold. Better than long underwear, and easy to take off if it warms up.
True!
I've also used my H-D rain suit pants in cooler weather when I didn't have my leather chaps or pants. Handy if rain is eminent too as you already have "half" of your rain suit on!
I refused to wear them for years. Then did a 4 day trip to Ruidoso in the fall. The higher country was cold and my wife ended up buying a pair for me at the Rally. That was 2013. I have worn those chaps on every ride that is longer than a few hours since. Even in the heat. i have found that is keeps my jeans cleaner, really helps in cool weather and the several times that debris has bounced up off the road, it saves my kneecaps( oil field traffic in Texas means semis with mud under them.I don't tail gate but getting a rock bounce is inevitable). I have the mounting system down as well as folding them into a small bundle.

Almost my same story. Except I rode for 47 years without them. Now unless it is just a quick city ride they are always on. Mine are HD and the only issue I had was the snap buttons. I could have had them fixed but figured the problem would happen again so had the mechanism removed and had Velcro installed. I kept the buttons for looks only.
My old buddy passed last year, now he rides with me in spirit. ....

I wear chaps in the cold too. They are the best way to go. If it gets any colder I put rain pants over top of the chaps. But it's pretty cold when that happens.
Naturally, the cotton chaps/shorts combination is similar to wearing jeans only. I have worn the cotton chaps over jeans and they add a layer of warmth.
If warmth is what you are looking for, I believe they offer a fleece lining. If abrasion resistance is what you are looking for, I suppose some of the other materials [eg., Kevlar or "ballistic nylon"] might offer that feature.
The only drawback to chaps is your nads freeze. I've thought about wearing some heavy shorts, hoping that might help but we didn't have much of a winter here last year.

Your nads freeze in a Texas? Come up to Canada for a while. They don't freeze, but you can't find them for six months.
