Never done the Dragon & no interest. I don't do squids & crowds well, tho I'd love to rent a cabin in the Maggie Valley area to visit the Wheels Through Time museum & explore the area.

Go ride it early in the morning like I did. All the squids and crazies are still sleep or just waking up. We rode it and there was zero traffic, felt like we had the roads all to ourselves. Later in the day while @ a gas station we heard some riders bitching about how packed it was later in the day around noon......
One of my favorites though is still the Blue Ridge from just north of Cherokee over to Asheville. Lots of areas to pull off and enjoy the great scenery and just generally a great ride!
Fantastic ride. If possible, start by coming south from Gatlinburg, great ride through the park, then get on the BRP at it's southern terminus just north of Cherokee.
I really fail to understand the attraction for riding a road that is full of curves that require your utmost attention. Maybe if I rode a Dookotty (that ain't gonna happen). I would rather ride a nice straightaway so I can appreciate the beautiful scenery without having to constantly up & down shift. But that's me.
Some nice rides in Floriduh, but straight as Ned Flanders. But if you like curves, switchbacks, and Americana, nothing beats US50 from Romney to Clarksburg, W. Va. My favorite road in the whole country. Never rode it on a bike, but was there just last month in the truck.

Tail of the dragon is a nice ride if you don't push it, it is curvy but if you follow the posted limit it is very nice and scenic. Tuesday she I rode it it was nice, I only had to let 1 squid by and I had to pull over to let slower newbies go further ahead so, it was nice to stop , cut the bike off and enjoy the scenery and listen to bikes rev up and down the road....
With that said like your US50, there are a lot of nice roads up up in Appalachia...

I'm not a morning person, by any means, but if I was in the area on a weekday, I might check it out. I spent 7 1/2 yrs in southern Germany & loved riding the Black Forest, but only during the week. Between squids on sportbikes & Oma 'n Opa out for their Sunday drive, it was patently unsafe to be out there on 2 wheels.
Besides, there are too many other stunning roads out that way, to deal with the traffic & squids, just for sake of being able to tell folks you rode the Dragon.

This is where we stayed...Kick *** place. About 5 miles from downtown Maggie Valley.
