Default cutting open oil filter?

How are you guys cutting open your oil filters to check for orange cam tensioner shoe peices? I am cutting a HD Premumin Superduty 5 oil filter.
I cut the can off from the top with a dremil cutter wheel and that went OK, but the paper filter element would not come lose so I had to cut the paper all the way arround the top and bottom plate, and then accrossthe paper from top to bottomtoo so I could get the paper to start un rolling.
Is this the way you guys do it?
I had 8 or 9 small flects of orange like very very small sand. So I guess for 30K on my 99 Ultra with 3K on the oil change that aint bad.
But I would like to check the filter every oil change now so is there a better way?

Well I take mine to work and spin it in an engine lathe and use a pointed lathe bit .
Works real slick . I suppose this doesn't help you .

I put mine in a vise (kinda loosley) and use a hack saw to cut around the rim just below the very ridgid part. I just did mine a few days ago and found six small specks. I found three trapped in the filter element and the rest in the bottom of the filter can. Reminded me of the time I went panning for gold in north Georgia. The difference is I wanted to findyellow stuff then. If the MOCO tried to put a fix on the 06 models. I am not so sure it worked but I don't have a gauge to judge how much is a lot of yellow plastic. If you know what I mean.

You can buy filter cutters from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. Fairly common practice in aviation. Look for one thats adjustable. They work like a pipe cutter with a wheel. Does it make it less messy? Hell no.

I got a special tool just for cutting open oil filters. I believe I got it from Chief's Aircraft supply--about ten dollars. I always did my own oil changes on my old Piper that I used to have, and I always cut open the filter looking for metallic residue.

It was adjustable and has worked on just about any canister filter I have come across. Might give you some advance warning if your engine is sick.

I was told by an old mechanic that as long as none of the pieces of metal you find in an oil filter have part numbers on them, you will be alright.

At 30k, I'd be pulling the cam cover to look at the tensioners...BTW, has your bike's rear cam bearing been updated?
