Default How To Do Stage 1 And Not Void Warranty

Just purchased a 2017 Low Rider and I have told my dealer that I wanted to do a Stage 1 upon delivery. Told them I would like VH 2:1 Pro Pipe, VH FP3, and HD SE Billet Air Cleaner.

Dealer told me a day later that instead of VH FP3 I need to use SE Pro Street Tuner if I don't want to void my warranty. Any way around this? From what I've been reading SE Pro Street tuner is a little wimpy. I'm under the impression the VH 2:1 Pro Pipe is a pretty nice upgrade. Wouldn't want to handicap that.

Thanks for the input.

He's lying to you. It doesn't void the warranty unless they can prove that it caused damage.

I had both of my Stage 1 on my way before the warranty was out.

Unfortunately, what he's telling you is correct. And you're also correct that the V&H Pro Pipe is incredible.

This is only correct for 2016 and earlier Harley-Davidsons, that do NOT fall under the EPA Consent Decree.

If you have a 2017 or later, and you use any tuner module other than the Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner to retune your bike, the Consent Decree mandates that your entire power train warrant is completely void. It doesn't matter if the tune causes any problems, it doesn't matter if something happens with the power train that is completely unrelated to the tune, the power train warranty claim MUST be denied.

If your dealer decides to take a chance and honor your warranty claim, if they're caught the fines will be in the thousands of dollars, and they could lose their dealership franchise.

If you want to use something other than the Pro Street Tuner module, then you're going to have to decide if you're willing to risk a power train warranty issue, and then pay for it yourself. And, if you have an Extended Service Plan, that is voided as well.

There is a partial work-around. If you do the work you want to do, and then use the SE Pro Street Tuner, you can download a "stock" tune that is reasonably close to what you need. Then, you or your dealer can do some small tweaks to the stock tune to get it closer to what you want. It won't be as good as a Power Vision tune, or a TTS Master Tune tune, but it won't void your warranty.

actually, it can and often does result in a voided warranty, even more so on the 2017s, and now 2018s. and Magnusson-moss will have absolutely no bearing on it. you are taking the bike out of epa compliance, that right there will result in a voided warranty on the powertrain. sure, you'll still be able to get your radio fixed, but if your engine blows, you're sol. look in your owner's manual, there is at least 5 warnings to this effect in there.

At least one forum member was denied warranty on his new bike due to the FP3 even though the true cause of the problem was a bad oil pump. He has a 2017 Road King with an M8.

They are being up front with you by saying you need the screaming eagle tuner to keep your warranty intact and that the fp3 tuner will void the warranty. There are countless threads about this stemming from the EPA ruling and fine Harley had to pay. I can't remember if this affected 2016's and up or 2017's and up, but regardless your bike is a 2017 therefore the ruling applies.

It is laid out in black and white. There is no gray area. The tuner is the most significant warranty requirement.

Your choices are:

Leave the bike's tuning stock until warranty runs out
Use a non compliant tuner and be prepared to pay for repairs out of pocket on the off chance that your bike does experience a problem.
Use the screaming eagle tuner which is EPA and warranty compliant.

Alternatively, if you would have bought an older bike none of this would matter.

Interesting the V&H website says the ProPipe is for "closed course, competition use only not intended for street use". Even the aftermarket is under the thumb of the EPA.

Must be different in Canada, less EPA restrictions, dealer will do Stage 1 with no void of warranty. Dealer once told me they do Stage 1 one 9/10 new bikes they sell. Stock exhaust is ridiculously tame.

Excellent info in this post. Thank you everyone for the input.

I'll prob just go with the SE Pro Street Tuner, VH Pro Pipe, and SE Air Intake.

Anyone know how the SE Pro Street Tuner would work with VH Pro Pipe?

Thanks.

Not really. They are just covering their @$$ in case they DO come under the EPA radar. If the EPA cites them for selling a non-EPA approved product to customers who are putting them on 2017 and above bikes, they can just point to the disclaimer on their website (and probably on the box and install instructions as well) and the responsibility falls on the customer who purchased it. Most other exhaust and tuner manufacturers have the same disclaimer, especially since the EPA came down on the MoCo last year...
