Default How to get more traction in the dirt.

This is the first time I've ever asked a question here. Thought I'd start here. I love to go to motorcycle rodeos. I have a 77 ironhead that was my first bike that I am using in the Rodeos. I do pretty good, but was wondering if there is a way to get more traction in the dirt. The rules state that the bike must have a road tire so can't put a nobby on. I'm sure putting the widest tire is a good place to start. What about gearing? Any information would be greatly appreciated Love playing in the dirt!

Less air pressure. Sipe the tire (if allowed).

You can run a shorter gear ratio, by changing your sprockets.

All you can do is look at different vendors for an aggressive non knobby tread.

What are your race buddies running?

They run what ever they run on the street. I'm one of the only ones that have a bike that is only for the Rodeos. Therefore I can make it more for the dirt and not care about ever getting to Highway speeds.

How would a shorter gear ratio help get more traction? Sorry I don't know more about that kind of stuff. In the drags and when I round the last barrel in the barrel race, I always wish my first gear was longer. Sometimes I shift to second but I wish I didn't have to.

Yup about 18lbs air pressure , old hardtail trick. And there's several adventure sport tires out that are street legal like Avons and few others, check the rules.

Wouldn't necessarily give you more traction so much as increase the leverage your tire has against your engine if that makes sense? Think of 4Lo in a 4x4. Harder to spin a tire, but your top speed will suffer, which may not be an issue on your course as you probably don't hit red-line in your top gear.

Smaller rear sprocket to go longer in 1st gear. It will effect your start.
Put pressure weight on outer peg and tuck outer knee into tank.
Press down on handlebar left for turning left, right for turning right)
Keep shoulders square and lean slightly forward.
Keep revs up in turns but compensate speed by slipping clutch in the turn (pull in clutch lever slightly) then release when coming out of turn.
