Default Clutch issue?

Posted this in the transmission/clutch section and didn't get much response and I wanted try in this section.

My son is interested in buying a 2010 Fat Bob with 8k miles. The one issue that I have with the bike is the clutch lever is hard to pull and it does not snap back as it should.

I was thinking that the cable may need lubrication, but I starting thinking that it could be a bigger problem.

Should my son be concerned?

Did you compare it to another Softail of the same year?

Could be as simple as needing a new cable, or way out of adjustment. Shouldn't have a clutch issue with that few miles. Price should go way down until you know for sure.

Notgrownup,

By any standard, it is not right. Hard pull and it doesn't snap back. I first thought cable lubrication and wanted to know if there could be more to it. It's seven years old with only 8,000 miles. The owner has ridden it much in the last couple of years and I thought if it sat maybe the cable got gummed up.

Could be one or more of the ***** between the ramps have become dislodged as well. Cable would be my first guess though.

My '07 Sport clutch cable doesn't call for lubrication, the metal cable is coated. I bet the 2010 would be the same.

Two thoughts:

- If it shifts smoothly, then odds are the clutch itself is fine.

- This is almost certainly a simple fix. Probably, at worst, a new clutch cable will sort it. That said, I have no patience for sellers who don't make the effort to get a vehicle properly ready for sale. I'd bid him hard over this. Talk about all the horrible, expensive things it might be. If he pushes back, tell him to call you after he get's it sorted.

8K miles in 7 years +/-, it's apparently sat a lot. My advice would be to squeeze the clutch in and spray wd-40 down the cable. Release and squeeze a few times and spray some more. If nothing else is wrong, it should get easier to squeeze. If it doesn't get easier to squeeze, then a deeper and more invasive inspection would be required. But I doubt if anything is majorly wrong with it though...

The only thing you should put down a cable is some type of graphite. Dri Slide works great. Don't spray WD40 in there. It leaves a residue which will attract dirt.
