Mauijohn look up counter steering. Google it and find a good road with little to no traffic and practice. This way you won't make a mistake when put into a situation.
I know of people getting hurt because they pulled the wrong way.

At that price range, start with a Yamaha V-Star 750 or 1100. Make sure bikes are your thing. Harley's are a steal now but still expensive. If you do do the Harley, make sure it's OK. These roller bearing motors are really expensive to repair unless you are a very compentant mechanical.
