This new one has a setting for AGM batteries. I was just wondering if anybody had used one and if it was any good.

Here is more food for thought...

According to this Yuasa tech manual...

When charging a motorcycle or other small battery, the battery charger should not exceed 3 amps. Most automotive types of battery chargers are not suitable for charging a motorcycle battery because they output current above 3 amps. For the correct charge rate a rule of thumb is to divide the battery’s amp hour rating by 10. For example a 14 AH battery should be charged at 1.4 amps (14AH ÷ 10 = 1.4amps).
and...

The current output of a battery charger, used to provide
a maintenance charge for powersports-sized batteries,
should not exceed 3 amps. Automotive or high-rate types
of battery chargers should not be used as they can overcharge
and damage small batteries.
The rating on that Viking is 4 amps.

How about another twist:

The Viking's users manual states...

Note: The charger automatically selects the appropriate
charge current based on battery capacity and power.
At first glance that statement seems clear enough. But... knowing how other maintainers work (or have worked in the past), they tend to (or used to) supply their rated current during the charge cycle. The manual does have a number to call for technical questions. Taking in consideration the cautionary statement put out by Yuasa, I might avail myself of it and ask for further clarification on that note/statement.

Thumbs up

I picked up a couple of these last week for me and my dad. Simply plug the unit into the pigtail on the bike for a quick reading. They work perfect and don't take up any space to carry in the saddlebags.

I just the other day purchased a HF charger/Maintainer - Viking brand. It claims suitable for cars, RV's, Tractors, Pickups, Boats and Motorcycles.
It supports AGM, GEL, Deep Cycle and standard batteries.
Lists 4 amps but "Fully Adjustable Microprocessor Control feature adjusts the amperage rate to charge and maintain batteries........"
'
My "Battery Tender" branded charger just died after 4 years of service so I purchased the HF one because of convenience of the HF store and of need.
It appears to work well as it topped off both my bikes and went to maintenance mode in a short period of time.
'
Cost was $26.xx. part number 63350. Time will tell.

Yes... that statement is applicable to all maintainers. They all adjust the amperage rate when moving/switching between modes/cycles (i.e. charging/absorption/maintenance). The more applicable statement is the note that I posted about previously.

That "short period of time" may be a problem. It may be applying too much current to the smaller battery and charging it too quickly. Particularly if there was some appreciable discharging before hand that would require a longer charging cycle.

Like I said, I would want some further technical information on it before making a decision.
