05 Road King someone thought they saw a little smoke, maybe it's time for a newer Harley. Or at least a 120 engine, that is the angle I would go with to convince the wife that it's time for an upgrade. "dang I like spending other peoples money for them" LOL
Only way I could spend any money, is if you gave me some.,,,,
Injectors are mechanical devices and CAN fail. But, they have been proven to be very reliable.
Typically, they get "varnished" over time. The spray pattern will degrade to the point that the fuel sputters and dribbles out rather than a strong spray mist. On my own bike, I think I may have that problem. So, over the winter, I'll remove 'em, and send 'em to a place that specializes in fuel injection to have 'em cleaned and checked.
In your case, you might suspect that one or both are hanging open. If that is the case, it would show up as raw fuel still coming out of the pipe (Black smoke). You fuel mileage would be bad and the plug(s) would be black and sooty. That is the first thing to check.
If it's oil that's burning, the smoke would be blueish. If it's bad the plug would be oily looking if it were really bad.
So, determine what liquid is being used up at an abnormal rate. Fuel or oil? Then pull the plugs and look at 'em. Do a compression check or leakdown check if you suspect excess oil consumption.
Don't guess. Diagnose. Then you'll have a course of action.
My 01 had a rear injector hang open, ran great, just a trace of black smoke once in a while. Finally started fouling rear plug, so I ordered new ones from HPI and have not had a problem since.
2005 models had a problem with the valve guide seals. Check your spark plugs, if one or both of them have a crusty build up on it, you will need to replace the seals.
I just changed them out a month or so ago, and they looked fine. Never had any oil consumption issues or even leaks with the bike. Has a little over 66k on it.,,,
