I will always own a Softail, would also love to get my hands on a FXR one day.
The swingarm on the FXR is also mounted to the rear of the transmission...

I've owned a couple of Dynas and loved both of them. Accessories are plentiful, huge aftermarket selection and they are comfortable and fast. They are also pretty nimble so if you like to throw your bike around now and then you'll have no issue with a Dyna. A 2000-2010 Super Glide or Street Bob can be had for well below 10 grand leaving some $$ to make it your own.
I wish I had a tough decision like this to make.

Most sensible/reasonable decision? I got nothing ...

I started down this road when I only had the 2013 Ultra Classic. First it was an 02 Heritage Springer. Then it was an 11 Crossbones. Next was a 98 Heritage Classic. Wednesday, I took delivery of an 05 Springer Classic. I customized the crap out of all of them ... Springer Classic pending.

For me (6'0", 240lb), I like the FL softails ... especially the FL springers. Your options for customizing are darn near limitless except for one thing. Parts are getting harder and harder to find.

Don't fool yourself into thinking it's going to be cheap either. I didn't do it to make or save money. I did it because I like doing it. I can't afford to sell any of mine, I'd lose to much money.

Good luck in your search, that's half the fun. It's a great source of pride when you finish ... especially when everyone gathers around it at bike night asking you all kinds of questions.

But it still pivots from the frame, not so on the Dyna. I was riding lead on my WG and a friend on a FXR riding behind me pulled me over to switch bikes so I could see what the rear tire was doing, it was all over the place, completely independent of the frame. The bike only had around 4300 mi on it, I wiped out the rubber mounts two more times after that before I sold it at 15000 mi. Then as a real kick in the nuts they come out with the FXR 2 shortly after I bought my Dyna, way to upside down in the payments to trade in and had already dumped money into the bike trying to make it something it would never be, a Softail. Rubbers are for preventing mini vans.

have to be at least a 1200 an a sportster, but i don't think there is really a lot you can do to customize a sportster. not my first choice.

obvious choice seems like a dyna, tons of options, tons of bikes available. but probably my second chioice.

if it were my money, i'd be looking at an early twin cam softail, personally it has the most style, and responds best to customizing. (just my opinion) and best bang for your buck. there are a lot that have already been customized, so find one pretty close to your style (plenty in the $4-6k range) and spend the resto of your budget to make it yours.

not really sure what you want to do with it. i have fantasies of buying a sportster to thrash around on but i realize it would never leave my garage. since you already have one, it sounds like that need is filled. dyna would probably suit your needs, but ive always thought they look stubby with the rear swingarm, but i could easily be swayed to a wideglide. the softail is the most "harley looking" though. ive always considered buying one as a backup bike,

not sure what your version of custom is. i've been having fantasies of going full apes and fishtails on an old roadglide.

im probably not helping much, just random thoughts.

My 3 choices would be
* A late shovel wideglide
* An Evo Softail Standard
* A 6 speed ????

Then again, I did this with a T100...
