Just out of curiosity, if someone is wearing a non-DOT helmet and gets into an accident and gets hurt or killed, is he disqualified for insurance benefits? Of course this means in a state that requires a DOT helmet being worn at all times.
You should check with your insurance carrier. We don't have a helmet law here but they do have the right to reduce benefits if you are not protecting yourself.
I would be guessing yes they would. Even when everything is legal insurance comapnies do not want to pay, so if you are not wearing a legal helmet and they find out I would lamost bet they would refuse to pay.
If you are asking about life or medical insurance, the answer should be "no".Your ins. will pay. You may be more vulnerable to a lawsuit from another injured party however. Most life insurance policies will pay even if you commit suicide if the policy is at least one year in effect, just not double indemnity.
Good advice from HC as usual. You should check. Your company may try to use comparative negligence as a means of reducing your benefits--maybe. In other words, your failure to follow the law and exercise proper use of required equipment resulted in more injuries than you might have suffered otherwise. I don't necessarily follow Slegeb1's theory of insurance practice, but hey, insurance companies are like attorneys and used car salespeople--everyone loves to dump on them. Guess we could add politicians to that mix as well.
If I die, My ol lady will be rich no matter what I am wearing on my head. But their are lawyers that specialize in getting people their money if insurance companies pull some bs and say they aren't paying.

Thanks everyone for the info. I always ride with a DOT but my buddies wear skull caps and have families. I try to get them to wear at leasta DOT but I'm really not getting anyway, thought that if there life insurance would be invalidated by a skull cap then it might change their minds.

Why would one "be more vulnerable to a lawsuit from another injured party" for wearing a non-dot helmet?
