When you get gas at a pump with a single line for all octane levels and the person before you gets 87 octane, how much fuel do you think is in the line before you start getting premium gas? When you're only getting 3 or 4 gallons think it makes a difference? We have 1 station in town with pumps with separate lines for all octane levels and that is where I get gas. I'm probably over thinking it.
You DO have a point.
Figure a 3/4" line about 8-10 feet in length, the pump sump & any associated plumbing from the tank outlet to the pump inlet. Maybe 2 to 3 quarts? Seeing as how you/we're paying for "premium", and not getting premium, that should be considered fraud or something. Yet, they get away with it. On the otherside of the coin~ What if the car/bike in front of you dispensed premium and you wanted regular? You'd obviously get some of their premium into your tank.
I had some 92 oct. tested by the Dept of Weights & Measures, years ago. Had a customer that said "My car/truck pings with this 92." Lab results came back: 92.3octane. No further action.
