Default Fuse / Electrical Question

I have just about finished my build (Chopper) and went to start engine yesterday. I do not remember if original Bike had a Fuse for starter... So I installed one...

Now every time I crank Engine... Pops Fuse. So I did a manual investigation of entire new Electrical Wiring. Only issue I found was @X1 Ohms I had about 3/4 scale of meter going from Positive lead on Starter to Starter Case. Took Starter out of circuit and ran 12VDC to it, it cranks....

I was told to remove fuse from circuit (Battery to Starter Solenoid) I put it in circuit to solenoid (Starter Switch to Starter Solenoid Coil...

Should I not have a fuse in starter circuit? I had broken Bike down originally to 3 fuses (Circuits)
Gauges and light circuits and starter solenoid:
Taillight and Turn signals
Starter

I now have still 3 circuits:
Gauges and light circuits
Taillight and Turn Signals
Starter Solenoid

I worry about protecting Starter. Engine is totally new, including Starter. When I had Starter removed from Engine I had also taken to Shop who had built it, They said Starter Amps is okay and to remove fuse (I had used a 20 amp fuse) Maybe I should use a 40 amp Circuit Breaker??

Help!!

Starter is not usually a protected circuit. I believe that usually there is a fuse or breaker between ignition or starter button and relay. Google or YouTube basic bike wiring.

The battery-starter connection is not fused. The positive lead from the battery runs directly to the starter.

Are you talking about the #4 or #6 wire going from the battery to the big post of the starter selonoid?
