Why don't people understand my roadtrip?
Here's the deal. Let me know if I'm the one out of whack, or just everybody else.
I was supposed to take today, tomorrow, and all next week off work to go fishing with my buddy and my dad. My dad can't make it, and so Cody and I each made our own plans.
I'm getting on my bike and riding around.
That's it. I'm deciding whether I'm going south or west tomorrow morning. North is out because I don't want to go anywhere near Chicago. At each stop, gas, toilet, food, cool photo opp, I'll again decide which way to go.
Everyone seems to say:
"Won't you get lonely?" Uh, no.
"I don't get it, where are you going." I suppose I'll know when I get there.
"What do you mean you're going no where special?" Uh, right, no plans.
"You're not going to see an old friend?" Uh, no, I hope to see a bunch of new ones.
"Why don't you GO SOMEWHERE?" Uh, I am going somewhere, several places, in fact.
"Are you really going alone?" Nope, there're hundreds of people already there. (Or, "you're welcome to come along.")
If and when I hit more'net access, I'll up date my progress going nowhere on my blog in at the myspace link in my signature.
So far, I've made it to my mother's house, short trip, long story.
Here's a pic of all my toys. Only two are going on the trip, and neither is red.

Yes, you see right, there are no bags on it. I have a bed roll, some bungees for the passenger seat, cargo pants, some web gear and pockets in my jacket. If I need more chit than that, I obviously don't know what I'm doing.
I would call at night if you have an idea of which way you are heading so that someone has an idea of where you are.

Traveling by yourself without a specific destination or schedule is a wonderful experience. I call it exploring. In 1982 I traded my 65 Mustang for a 76 VW camper, put all my belongings in storage and explored the country for two years by myself with nothing more than a Rand McNally road atlas. It was the experience of a lifetime. Don't worry about what other people think or say about your journey. Just do it and enjoy it. You will have lasting memories that most people can only dream of.
