I am surprised no one mention a compromise such as a modular, I have the Shoei Neotec and it has drastically reduced the wind noise. Allows one to flip up the front for water, talking etc, yet offers great protection.

You should maybe try those ear plugs that mold to your ears. They're silicone, so easy in, easy out, and you can have them molded to fit your ear buds, if you want, plus they're only about $10 from Amazon. The key when you're molding them is to keep your jaw open while they're "curing". If you don't mold them to your ear buds, they have a kit that screws into them to have a string/lanyard to hold them together around your neck so you don't lose them.
Personally, I like both the ear plugs AND either 3/4 or Full Face helmet to keep out all the wind noise, but my ear buds actually block almost all the noise anyway.

I ride with an Aria Signet Q full face. It's very comfortable but I believe the aerodynamics of the helmet are made for a more forward leaning position, such as on a superbike. As a result, I do get a little more noise from the vents, etc on the shell of the helmet.

In any event, even when I wear my full face, I still wear ear plugs. The older I get, the more I realize that my hearing doesn't 'bounce back' like it did when I was younger. I have a couple pairs of these ones that I use regularly.

The Surefire EP3 (two flanges instead of 3) are usually able to be found at Bass Pro or Cabela's.

I wear earplugs will all my helmets (3/4 or FF). I'm trying to preserve what hearing I have left.

I've tried 1/2, 3/4, modular and FF. I'm not far from Revzilla in Philly so I went there when I was shopping for a full face helmet. Went in with a budget in mind and tried on everything I could. Alot of nice helmets in the <$300 range but nothing I felt I had to have. Decided to try on some Shoei and Arai just to see how they felt and ended up purchasing a Shoei RF-1200. Alot lighter, more quiet, way more comfortable and fit my head shape better then anything I've owned or I tried on. I tell myself I can't believe I paid that much for a helmet but even a year later I'm happy with the decision I made. Both Shoei & Arai felt equally nice but the Shoei just seamed to have a better fit for me. This helmet is technically designed for the tucked riding position but at 80mph I'm pretty comfortable and get alot less wind buffering than I do with the modular and fullfaces I've owned or tried.

My vote would be to do your research and then in possible go try before you buy. Oh and I still wear earplugs no matter what helmet I'm wearing.

I have 3 helmets.

LS2 Valiant II Modular which gives me the best fit and has decent ventilation. I like the fact that you can flip the chin piece over on hot days.
Icon Airform Full Face which is quieter but is hot.
LS2 Rebellion Half Helmet. LIght and comfortable.

I use the Valiant II the most as it fits the best and give the best protection.
Still looking to find the best fit.

Shoei RF-SR full face here. I wear earplugs religiously. You can pick up a box of them from grainger for like $40. I wear corded foam ones and just cut the cords short. Wear them until they're dirty and toss them. I don't like the feel of the silicone ones. They hurt the inside of my ears. Custom molded silicone might help but I doubt I could get them installed exactly the same every single time and I think that might create a pressure point. No matter how the foam is oriented it will conform to the ear canal.

Because of my preference for modulars, it would appears as though I have to put up with more wind noise than a full face. Ear plugs are a must for me, as stated above, trying to save what hearing I do have left.

Schuberth modular. Quiet, light, very comfortable. Don't spend more on a helmet than the contents are worth...

But, since we have reopened it, I went full face as it’s just better for long road trips and then the comfort from not being beat up by wind of which is something I didn’t differentiate when I rode and felt like I had been riding. Now it’s like I almost didn’t ride
