Default Tire Question

I just bought a used Harley from a local dealer. Once I got home I realized that one of the tires was on backwards. Should this tire be replaced?

Lol.

Elaborate. What do you mean that it's on backwards? Which tire? What brand/model/size tire?

Well, I'm not sure. Actually it is my son's bike. He just said that the tire was on backwards and he took it back to the dealer and they switched it but I'm concerned that if it was used like that, maybe it should have been replaced?

I would. They don't spend money to imprint those little directional arrows for nothing.

Just curious, it you just bought the bike and you think the tire is on backwards, what did the dealer have to say when you showed him?

Actually, my SON just purchased the bike. He took it back to the dealer and they just turned the tire around but I decided to investigate and the more I read about it, it seems like they should have REPLACED that tire. We have no idea how many miles was ridden with the tire like that. He bought a 2006 Harley.

I'm not the most knowledgeable by any stretch of the imagination but I had a bro who had a tire installed backwards at a dealership. We stopped by an indy shop to get my bike and head out, when one of the wrenches noticed his tire improperly installed. They took care of it and the tire had only been installed for a few days. They told us that the tire was prone to "unwind" if ran backwards for any real length of time/miles. Basically... the metal cords in the tire would start to loosen inside the rubber and possibly even bunch up, causing tire bulge. All potentials mentioned were obviously bad.

Being a used bike that's new to you with unknown mileage on that tire... I'd have it swapped out unless it looks brand, spankin' new. Even then, I'd probably talk to the shop that sold it to him and see what they know about it. It would be a drag if they just replaced the tire for re-sale and the shop wrench screwed up. Tires ain't cheap but avoiding a trip in the meat-wagon is priceless.

Of course... my info is hear-say, so handle accordingly.

I wouldn't worry about it.

The arrows on a tire are to give maximum traction, braking, and helps the tread clear water.

Tires that can be used on front or back have two arrows.
