Hi, Folks,
I have a 2006 Softail Deluxe that was converted to an open primary. The clutch basket has 6 individual springs as opposed to the stock big pressure plate. The bike is new to me so I'm going through it and noticed just a tiny bit play front to back -on the clutch plate assembly - very slight like maybe a 1/16: Just enough that I can twist it forward (as in toward the front wheel) and backward which produces a slight knock when twisted either front or back. No play is detected side to side (left to right when sitting on the bike) - just front to back play. Bike operates fine and don't hear any knocks while running.
I've been looking at assembly / disassembly of the clutch basket and plates and can't see why it would be able to rock like that - even if just that little bit. The only thing I can think is the slots on the clutch plates themselves allow for that little bit of play. I don't know what is considered normal play so thought I would throw it our to this group.
If you are talking of radial play (in the direction of rotation) then a bit would be "normal". If there were no radial play the plates would get hung in the slots in the basket causing no clutch, or at the very least a draggy one.
