Now that ya all have run your mouth on what ya think ya know, Harley has a recall out on a diaphragm that goes in the clutch fluid reservoir for the 2016 model at least. Just as the OP described it, a bad diaphragm will cause bike lurch when starting in gear which can be done. So next time ya all take your bike in for an oil and filter change by the dealer, have them check that clutch fluid reservoir. Then you can sit in the waiting room and tell people how much ya know about changing air in your tires.
And here I thought the 2019s had some of them new fancy secondary hydraulic brakes everyone's been talking about...i guess I'll wait for 2020s
do you really think the moco is gonna start using higher quality parts? If you want a new HD, buy it and then go to the aftermarket for better fixes. I can tell you this, Ill never buy another new harley. Its ridiculous to spend over 23 grand and then drop more to make it run proper and safe

The OP blamed it on hydraulic brakes! He referenced hydraulic brakes several times...not clutch! That why we had our fun with him.
Why would anyone want to start their motorsicle NOT being in neutral?
One example is when you are waiting for a green light while stopped on a hill and stall the bike when starting out. Car behind honks. Bike drifts slightly rearward. The heat is on, stress builds, horn honks again..
Much easier to just pull in clutch, hit starter and be on your way.
The other method would be to try and find neutral, shifting from 1st into second, back into first, constantly missing neutral. Finally you shift into neutral while trying to holdi the bike from rolling back, start the bike, shift into first, and go.
Just saying there are times when starting in gear is the preferred method.
