Default Bubbled Master Cylinder Paint

Leaking brake fluid from the master cylinder is a common HD problem. The paint on my Street Glide master cylinder / brake lever mount point is bubbled and ugly. I'm pretty **** about my bike, and that irritates me to no end. Any ideas on covers or repaint to fix the paint? What have you all done? Thanks!

Fortunately my two Dynas use a DOT 5 fluid, when they leaked I didn't experience the bubbling of paint. Wipe off the cylinder and cover with alcohol, cover the tank and fender, remove cover and gasket. Dry the gasket edge real good and the sealing surfaces. Put the gasket and cover back on, tighten the cover to 8 in.lbs., this just barely makes the gasket bulge out. For paint, I'd prep the surface clean, prime the bare metal and hit it with some flat black or semi-gloss paint after covering everything you don't want painted.

Normally I don't like plastic or ABS parts, but that is one place a rigid formed molded piece might work well. Actually thought about taking a bakelite bar from work and fitting it.

HD should just leave these parts a plain, no paint. Either that or chrome it all straight from the factory. They are cheaping out on them.

That’s what you get with DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid. It’s the world’s best paint remover. DOT 5, being a silicone formulation won’t do this. Harley used to use DOT 5, but it’s incompatible with ABS. Everybody decided they’d rather have ABS, so....

I have used satin black touch up paint from the auto parts store with good results. FYI it is typically from over tightening the cover.

Same here. I did try 3 different rattle cans to get the exact match.

FYI I intentionally use a bit excess, and then use a thick piece of paper to drag across the edge to flatten and even it out with the existing paint. It matches up nicely, and appeases my OCD.

You will never get a good hard brake with silicone is the only problem.'
It will always feel a bit mushy
