Default Ambulance Service at Sturgis Campgrounds

How would you feel knowing that your Sturgis Campground is outside the service area of the Sturgis Ambulance Service? The city is asking campgrounds to pay an assessment based on prior year's calls. Any who don't pay will be removed from the service area.

Why is the campground even involved? First. They MUST provide service. Don't=$$$. Second, they always bill the patient. Just another all to well known Sturgis money grab. Besides. Campgrounds pay taxes. They cannot be dropped from service.

Nothing is for free. It's a short season for them, if they can grab a few bucks to carry them over, good for them. I was there, I want service of an ambulance if needed.

What you are failing to realize or understand is that the CITY ambulance service does not HAVE to provide services OUTSIDE of the CITY LIMITS. They have been doing so but they don't HAVE to. Yes, the campgrounds pay taxes to the county and state but NOT the CITY of Sturgis. In a nutshell, the campgrounds don't pay for the service now through taxes and the city doesn't have to provide them services.

I think it's bigger than the Ambulance district. The city is frequently at odds with the rally business owners. The city has tremendous costs associated with the Rally and are doing what they can to recover funds where they can. The city owns the rally trademark but it was recently ruled the trademark was invalid.

Nov 3, 2018 - " The law firm of Patterson Thuente IP, in Minneapolis, issued a news release saying that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit found that a federally registered trademark owned by Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. (SMRI) is invalid. "

The city did what they could to annex the areas E of town along the highway when the campground action moved out of the city limits. They went after the Buffalo Chip when they incorporated. Seems like they're trying to claw back whatever expenses they can. Looks like the city is bracing for a shortfall if they have their trademark fines overturned. It doesn't seem reasonable for the residents to absorb the cost of deadbeats so they need to work out some kind of arrangement.

Small campground $300 fee, Large campground up to $5,100. I don't see problem.

All the tax dollars that are brought in during the rally should provide gold wheels for the ambulances. Lots and lots of money changing hands and tax being paid on it all.

TRUE. City does not have jurisdiction in the County. But, there is such a thing called 'mutual aid' and is commonly used at these events. Fees for city to assist county? Political posturing will prevail in this situation. Seems the County should be collecting special fees for this event to reimburse the city.
