Did the suicide clutch have a spring that brought it up? Mouse trap clutch? What years were these bikes? My first Harley is a 97 Softail Classic so a bit new to HD.

All the ones i had relied on the clutch springs to return the pedal to an upright position with the suicide setup. Mouse trap and rocker clutch pedal had their own spring. Same thing with the trans shifter, Straight top lid require you to place shifter handle in proper location for whatever gear you wanted. Racket lid , the handle sprang back to middle position just like all the foot shift bikes of today.

Suicide clutches came about as a simple way to eliminate the Mousetrap clutches. I believe H-D's big twins from 1952? to 1967? were Mousetrap clutches. There was a clutch release lever that ran from the right side of the trans over the trans & was connected via an actuator rod to the mousetrap assembly on the left downtube. The mousetrap used spring & lever pivoting assembly to get enough travel distance to engage/disengage the clutch using that release lever. The other side of the mousetrap went to a hand lever on the left handlebar via a cable. The clutch release lever was basically the same as when H-D used rocker foot clutch. H-D eventually went to the ramp/ball actuated via cable clutch setup & did away with that clutch release lever & mousetrap mess.

I grew up riding a jockey shift , foot clutch setup and loved it for many years, even without a front brake. We used to take that crap off and throw it away along with those ugly fatbob tanks. Who would have known how this would have come out. Damn, i wish i would have kept every old part i've taken off. But this is the way it was back then.
It works through the neutral switch there is a divot between each gear on the drum. here is a link to the wiring diagram:
