I've got the "ear buzz" as well, which reminds me, I need to get some soon. I use silicone ear plugs because they mold to my ear, they're waterproof, and they're cheap. I couldn't pay $30 for Eargasms or such, because I'm prone to losing ****.

I wear them because I'm already hard of hearing and don't want it to get any worse. Hearing damage is cumulative and even moderately loud noise over an extended period will damage your hearing. I can tolerate the noise even at 70 mph, but I know it's bad for my ears.
Here's something to consider: Tinnitus often goes along with hearing loss. You can't imagine how much I wish my ears didn't ring constantly. Drives me crazy sometimes.
I wear them first and foremost because they protect my hearing. Dont wanna be like my dad and not be able to hear when Im his age. I have been that way my whole life. Whenever I do anything loud, I wear plugs or muffs. I also never drive with my windows down. Thats another big cause of hearing loss.
They also allow me to hear everything better when Im on the bike. Cut out the wind noise and its amazing how much more you can hear.
Definitely wind noise. With some full face helmets the noise can be worse because the helmet acts as kind of an echo chamber and actually seems to amplify the noise. I have had good luck with eargasm ear plugs.
^^^This. Mainly fatigue factor for me. I do a lot of long rides. FF & half helmets.

The Eargasm plugs work best for me too, they're not cheap at $34, but they do get rid of the wind roar. I had to go with the smaller size as the 'regular' size was too large for my ear canal and gave me a headache.

You just described the noise level in my HJC modular. It turns out that the big rear vents that do such a good job channeling hot, stale air out of the helmet, let in a ton of exhaust noise. Around town or on a short ride its not bad, but it gets tiring very quickly on the interstate.
Dennyo have you tried those new Bose noise-masking Sleepbuds? My wife got them recently to help her sleep (my snoring has always given her trouble) and she said they work wonders! Not like just putting earplugs in. They have preloaded background sounds that act like a kind of "white noise" that drowns out the ambient sounds. Seems that would help with the Tinnitus as well. Just a thought
Exactly what I was going to post! My wife bought a set for me for Christmas and they're awesome. Not cheap, but work great! I use them sometimes during the day if I want noise drowned out or if I want to be able to focus reading.
To the OP's question, I use plugs to cut down on the wind noise for riding. I wear them under a FF helmet. Hate wearing plugs and hate wearing a FF, but I'm doing what I need to do to keep my constant Tinnitus at bay. I use a few different brands and make sure that I put them in properly every time.

These are the reasons why I wear them. I can still hear well and dont have tinnitus at age 45.
If you ever use them and get used to them, there will be no turning back. I have only been wearing them since 2005. If I would have known better, I would have worn them starting in 1987.
I wear ear plugs if going any distance more than a few miles. I like the lower Db ones that allow me to hear the radio, pipes and traffic noise, but muffle the sounds some
