I have 2014 HD Streetglide with a stock air filter. The manual says to use a MILD soap. Dawn works well with grease. Is it too harsh for the air filter??
Thanks in advance for the advice
1. Gently tap the filter element to dislodge loose debris and brush remaining loose debris from filter.
2. Clean filter using warm water mixed with a mild degreaser like Simple Green or Formula 409. Dawn will also work well.
3. Do not use gasoline, brake cleaner or other harsh chemicals to clean the filter media.
These products will erode the filter media. Always inspect filter media and gasket seal for
deterioration. Replace filter as needed.
4. Shake off excess water and allow filter to thoroughly dry prior to riding. Do not use compressed
air to dry. It will damage the filter media.
NOTE: Do not oil the filter media (except for K&N filters).
I recently cleaned the stock filter of a 2014 Ultra and I just filled a bucket with a couple gallons of warm water and a little Dawn dish soap. Submerge the filter and let it soak for a couple hours, then swish it around in the bucket to dislodge any leftover debris, rinse it with low pressure warm water, I like to let the water run into the inside of the filter and push anything that may be in the media to the outside of the filter. Hang it up and let it air dry it over night. No problems using this method.
that would be the ticket! The only problem with doing this is the wait.... you need to be idle for at least a day... bit of time to wash/clean the filter and a day to dry.
So then buy a new filter and install it, then clean the other one at your leisure, and swap it back when it's time to clean again. Don't think the element is terribly expensive.

No sir. Ride till you're ready to go home, wash the filter and let it dry in the shower over night. Even if its slightly damp in the morning its OK. No big deal, put it back on and go. Hell it will get a little wet when you get caught in the rain.
Or do as others said and have a spare to swap back and forth. I think they only cost about $12 or $13 bucks.

Just an observation but, submerging the entire dirty filter at the same time will allow particals of all sizes to be suspended in the water and, possibly, end up on the inside surfaces of the filter. What ever doesn't get rinsed off and is too large to go through the filter (>50 microns or so) will simply end up embedded in the inside surface when you rinse inside out and head for your intake on re-install. Something to consider.
Bucket soapy water.
Swish-swish
Little rinse inside out with light spray from water hose.
Shake and reinstall...and run it.
No air hose. Will blow openings in it.
No soak..leave that for you and her bubble bath.
Hurts nothing it being damp. Believe it or not, some of us do get caught in the rain.
