Question Looking to buy 1st HD (used 2001 Superglide,)

Owned bikes on & off for 40 years. Never owned a HD, but like low riders, soft tail customs, & superglides.

found a 01 Superglide with 14,000 miles, garage kept, 2 owners for $4000. Familiar with the cam tensioner shoe issue, upgrading to an S&S cam plate & oil pump kit would be the first thing I’d do. I’m good with the stock power on this year bike. Given the above, what would be a reasonable price to offer? Is this a good solid bullet proof year for the Superglide?

If it is a good clean bike that runs doesn’t sound too bad. I would think $3500 would be a better deal. Not many dyna’s in my area less than $5k though, that kind of seems to be the floor.

I think I would use the tensioner issue as a reason to bring the price down.

I have an 02 Softail and it's been by far the best of all the Harley's I've owned. I don't think you can go wrong even at 4K. Post some pics if you get it.

It does have the timkem bearing on the crank which is good. Convert to hydraulic tensioners or gear drive. But if I was going to open the cam chest, I would consider a 95 build. Give you more power than bigger factory bikes.

Probably going to have some oil leaks. They were doing single lip seals. My 01 had some leaks. Brake clean fixes those.

To me it seems ok price. When it comes to used, it gets hard to say up or down. Do you like the bike, is another locally you want? If yes and no, get it.

'01 and '02 were the best years for the Twin Cam until the MoCo started d!cking with things starting '03. Granted, you've gotta keep on top of the cam chain tensioners but other than that they're solid.

I had an 02 Super glide, basically the same as the 01. One of the best running, reliable bikes I ever owned. Offer him $3000 and go from there, even if he sticks to $4000 its a fair price.

Great choice for a 1st Harley (or second, or third). Price sounds fair. I would toss out a fair offer and go from there.

Welcome!
