In order for someone to get caught driving without a license, they have to get stopped. If the car is uninspected, there's some visual evidence of that as a reason to be stopped, which is a motivator to get it done, especially in states like mine where your registration renewal is dependent upon getting the inspection. Of course not doing it is no guarantee that people won't drive, but it does keep most honest, and that's protection for everyone. I've been surprised in my youth to learn that one of my tires was so warn out that it needed replacing. I just didn't have the experience or maturity yet to keep up with that stuff, and the inspection caught. it.
Inspections are about protecting others from the vehicle owner, not protecting the vehicle owner.
Murder is illegal, no inspection. Selling drugs are illegal, but they need a warrant to come in my home.
We disagree on how much freedom to give up, just to feel good. I don't believe in passing laws, just cause I like the outcome.
Just moved to TX last year. Never had inspections. They Indy guy came out checked my tires, lights and horn. Thank you very much. Everyone should have those in good condition anyway.
No sweat.
Depend on the inspection station just like here. Some are in just for the bucks, some will flag anything that they can fine, Arseholes. ran into one two yrs ago here. Dumb **** bitch. She wanted to do a test on the window tint of my truck. I said fine, do it. It's tinted with legal tint. She came back and said my truck failed. The driver side and passenger side were too dark to pass inspection. She issued me a failed inspection for too dark tint.
My major question was why don't you offer a free tint test to your customers before you open the inspection book and start listing this crap? I let them know that I would not be back to their business before I left.
I threw a fit. I let them know they were FOS. My tint was legal. Regardless, I had to pay them $20 for a failed inspection even after doing a hell bent argument . I figured I'd better leave before they had me arrested even though my top was blowing off.
I stopped off at my inspection guy later and he chewed on me a bit but issued me an inspection, another $20.

Interesting. In Virginia, if something causes the vehicle to be rejected, you have 10 days to correct the defect and get it reinspected without being charged again.

To not be charged again you have to go back to the station that issued the rejection.
Just once, in all my years of driving, I was in a hurry and stopped at a place that I'd never used before. After the guy pulled a rear wheel to check the brakes he said one of the lug nuts was bad.
I told him if he had any there to try one of his and I would pay for it. He tried one and said it wouldn't work either. I picked up my original one and screwed it on. Asked him to tighten it.
He then noticed a cracked front signal light lens which I had put a clear piece of tape over probably 5 years ago. That created a huge problem for him. I asked if he was going to reject the inspection and he said he was.
Told me to get the cover fixed and bring it back. I got one at a junkyard and took the car to another station for inspection. Had to pay the fee again.

that surprises me that TX has those inspections, as here in the state with the Peoples Republic of Seattle does not, though I better not talk too much about it and give them ideas.

All states are different to maybe not requiring inspection or not much of an an inspection or ***** to the wall to checking everything including exhaust emissions. Here, I can pass inspection easy at the places I know. Again, it depends on the inspection station.
I'm so damned tired of that. They're not being nanny when they inspect. You're not the only damn person on the road. Inspections are an attempt to protect others from you. If you call that being a nanny state, then I guess having a military makes us a nanny country! LOL
my BS meter just pegged on that one
inspections are nothing but cash cows for states without citizens brave enough to vote politicians out of office.
now that insurance is mandatory in all 50, why do we NEED inspections?
are you REALLY so terrified of chipped paint or a scratched windshield?
edit.......and y'all can just shut up about my bike being too loud......unless you're going to pull every 18 wheeler off the roads first.....and planes & trains too

Someone said neither does CA. Texas isn't as much into freedom as they talk up.
