Default Painting engine

I have a '97 Superglide and love the bike but would like to change the engineand jugs to black instead of the natural finish. Is this something that can be done without too much expense and time. I am already looking at it as a winter project (Ohio resident, so I have about 8 months to complete). I have found black bead blast at the stealer but wasn't sure if this was the right route to go or if I should go with a high-temp engine paint from an automotive supplier.

Any input or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Believe it or not, I once did a Sportster motor by painting the cases and jugs with black wrinkle out of a spray can and baking the parts in my oven. It came out great.

I did that to an old shovel once and it did look good... as long as the engine was cool. Once it heated up it got all shiney and lost some of the wrinkle. Another time I used a flat black VHT high temp paint and it looked great!but I only did the jugs. I left the aluminum natural.

Neverthought aboutpainting an aluminum engine. Would painting affect the heat dissapating effect of aluminum any more than powder coating? I assume the engines are powder coated from the factory....?

You used to be able to get wrinkle black by the quart from the dealer. It was the same thing they used before they went to powder coating. I did the engine , trans & primary on my '86 Softail. It was what now days would be called a standard. Raw cases & polished/clear-coated covers. The biggest challange is curing the outer layer of paint quick enough to get the wrinkle. This happens because the outer layre cures before the inner layers, so that when they cure & tighten up it wrinkles. An electric oven is almost a must have. I cured my parts by hanging them over (about 3'-4') a salamander heater. But not in the room I shot them in. Still spent the next summer smelling tolule (the active thinner in the paint) fumes. As for the spray cans I have used them with good results, did the oil cooler & some other small parts. Just dont know how they would hold up to the heat of the jugs & heads. What ever you do make sure you clean it thoroughly first. Like degreaser & a scrub brush folowed up with a steam cleaning.
