Default Speedometer or cable???

So, I'm not mechanical, I'm a software/computer geek ... know that going into this question ...

I have a 1996 Road King (FLHR/I) with 15K miles on it (it was the first owner's weekend toy) ... now, the speedo on this bike was already changed out by HD under warranty back in 1998ish.

Anyway ... I'm coming back from Huntington Beach HD today, and I take the off-ramp, pull up to the light ... look down as my Speedometer and it says I'm still going 65 miles an hour, standing still with both feet flat on the asphalt.

Over the ride home, it seemed to work intermittently, but never displayed less than 10 mph.

So I guess the first question is, is the speedometer mechanical like cars when I was kid (I'm 64) or were they fly by wire by 1996?

And does this issue sound like a speedometer problem or sending unit/cable problem?

What do you guys think?

Thanks ahead of time.

You have an electrical speedometer. A good place to start is to check the connections to the speedometer and clean the VSS (Speed Sensor). You can search the forum for photos/directions for cleaning the VSS. Having the Service Manual his strongly recommended. If you are not mechanically inclined you can take your bike to your local independent shop or Harley Dealer to resolve the problem.

Thank you MMesa ... I will follow your lead. I'm not totally inept with a wrench, but I'm not a mechanic either, and its highly unlikely I will become one at 64.

I have an outstanding mechanic standing in the wings as back up.
