Rode today to the store. Started fine here at the house. Rode for about 15 minutes and stopped. When I came back and to went to crank the motor I got the slipping grinding type noise. I reset the compression releases and tried again. Same thing. Third time same thing. I didn't think it was going to start but it finally did.. I rode home, shut it off and tried it right back and did the same thing again. I tried it three more times and it started fine. It has always started good when it is cold. I don't have or cant detect any noise from the primary. No noise going down the road at any speed and no clunking from the primary when I kill it. Only problem is on staring after it is warmed up. I have asked before but does this sound like the compensator?
2007 Ultra Classic with 103 kit. Has compression releases.
I replaced the starter clutch on my softail in April and my starter recently died, but the clutch is still perfect, if you want the clutch I pulled out I can sell it to you dirt cheap.
My wife's bike did similar except it would go to start and literally kick back when the starter clutch was going out.
If it is your original starter I would replace it with a larger KW starter. My 07 street glide did the same thing, terrible noise. Replace starter all was fine.
This is actually the third starter. Well the one that came on it and two more. The one on it now is a stock starter. My friend that I bought it from had starting problems. I thought it was fixed but I guess not. One private shop and the Harley shop put on new starters. The harley shop put in a new clutch also. I guess it could be the clutch. That would definitely be the cheapest thing to try. Thank you for the suggestions.

Sorry. I meant to say replace starter clutch would be the cheapest part to replace and see if it helps. Makes me wonder if this stock weak compensator is running the starter clutch.
The motorcycle was four years old before starting problems began. Wonder if the clutch starter was bad and they just replaced the starter and it was good to go for a while and now this one is bad. Don't know.

Why would the commentator kill a starter clutch? I would love to know, since I just changed a starter on an 08
I went to one of the local shops and talked to the owner. He used to work at the Harley shop. I told him what I could about the bike and the starring problems. We walked outside and he started the bike probably eight times. A few without the compression releases. It balked a couple of times and made the noise. From what he heard he said he believes it is the compensator. He said he could install a drag specialities compensator for 658.00. I can buy a screamin eagle compensator 338.00 plus shipping. Probably would cost me 400. plus the aggravation factor to change it. I believe I can do it without any problem. I will have to think on it a little.
I have noticed while riding it get a ticking or not really knocking sound but a sound while riding. It makes the noise under load. If I let off the throttle I don't hear it. I think if it was the valve train it would make it all the time. Could it be the compensator I am hearing. I thought it was valve train noise and may be I don't know. Could be the compensator under load. For 658.00 I could go with the screamin eagle compensator and new starter clutch and new chain tensioner. If I do the compensator I will grind the clearance on the inner primary to remove the rotor. If anybody else has done this or knows of a video showing how they did it please let me know. I have a idea how to contain the shavings but any advice would be appreciated.
