My friend and I were out riding today and there was a bit of a wind. I was on my NT and he was on his RK custom. We were mostly doing about 60-70mph on the highway and I felt that I was being blown all over the road when the wind would gust and he said that the wind had no affect on him at all. Question; does having one type of bike over another make that much difference. Which is best when riding in the wind (I am not talking about bikes with windshields either).
When I had the fat boy front wheel disc and my saddle bags on, I get blown all over the place (especially over Pancheco Pass to Hollister). I noticed a change for the good when I bought my Performance Daytona wheels - I wasn't being blown around as much. The huge difference is when I ride without my leatherpro saddlebags. I cut through the wind a lot better, even with riding with a windshield.
One of the things I've talked about the wind with several people is how you ride through it. You must throttle on and not coast as soon as a gust blasts you. Use the power of the engine to your advantage.
I have a rk custom, and on a very windy day, I still get blown around. I would rather ride in rain, than wind. But, I have noticed, the more miles I put on my bike, the less the wind and grooves in the road, affect me. At first, I felt every groove, and the slightest change in the wind. Now, I don't even give it a second thought. Maybe give it some more time. I have rented several bikes, before I got my bike, and yes, I could tell a difference in the way that they all handle the wind.
there is also a big difference in a solid wheel and a spoke wheel
I have a solid wheel on the rear of my shovel and a spoke on the front
I am soon going to change out the rear solid for another spoke wheel
Seems like it depends on wind direction also. Head on just kills gas milage, cross winds tend to move me around somewhat, but God bless the tail winds>
You guys just need to pack more pounds on your ***. Once that's accomplished no wind, other then a tornado, will blow you around. Just ask me, I know...[:@]
