Default Pinga ling a ding

I have an 88 2000 ultra classic that was bored to a 95 but then a 103 crank and pistons installed. Stock heads and S&S 510 cams. I have pinging like no tomorrow, especially when hot. I've had it dyno'd and they can't seem to work it out. I'm guessing the modifications are just to "unmatched". One thing a local shop said is that I have higher compression with the 103 stroker set up and the 91 octane gas just isn't enough. I've tried adding octane booster which gets me to about 96 octane but still pings. I've mapped and remapped. The same shop said I should put on 60K head gaskets to reduce the compression and that should help. This may make sense when I see that the 510 cams are for up to a 96" kit and 9.7:1 compression. Could it be a simple as decreasing the compression ratio? Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your help.

TC-88 with a longer stroke TC-103 crank and a 95 inch kit should give you a 103 inch engine. S&S 510 cams in your engine will give you around a 9.43:1 compression ratio. Cold cranking pressure of 196 psi at sea level. That's good. Ya don't really want to lower the 9.43:1 compression ratio. Since it pings more when hot, maybe ad an oil cooler to help keep the heat down. Only other options are fatten up the fuel curve or retard the spark advance. Contact the maker of your fuel programmer and ask for their advise.

Thanks Texas Scooter Trash. I wasn't sure how the cams affected compression ratios or if it was all about bore and stroke. I knew the 510's weren't "rated" for over the 9.7:1 and thought maybe that was working against me. Those were in the bike when it was just the TC-88 and before the modifications. I have an oil cooler that is fan driven and comes on quite a bit actually along with Love Jugs cooling fans that I run around town. She just seems to run real hot. I have a Power Commander USB III on the bike and I've since reached out to those folks and they have recommended a couple of their "pre-mapped" tunes. I'm going to try them and see. I was wondering if there was some other issue with a sensor or something that could be throwing it off. I did have it dyno'd a few years ago and even after that it was a bit quirky. I have fuel numbers up in the 80's, 90's and 100's and retarded numbers at -4 to -7 at various spots on the timing chart. So your thought is not to increase the deck height and mess with the compression ration? Hey, thanks for taking interest.

Way back when I had pinging issues on a previous bike, the only two
thin that helped was going to a colder plug and retarding the timing
min the rpm that I noticed pings. I used a tts master tuner
to do that.

Bathtub chambered heads with a tight squish band will fix the ping issue, OP.

What about just keeping the RPMs higher?

I have 9.7, I richened up a bit. Next time will stay closer to stock compression.

You are just masking the problem. I'm running 9.8-1 compression on my daily rider (190 ccp) and it never pings running 87 octane regular gas. Not even riding 2 up in 110 degree temperatures. You have to run the right heads and cam to be able to do that, though.

I should mention I'm running two plugs cooler as well. Is there an issue with running the stock heads? Is that that mis match here? Thanks all

I get what you are saying, about proper tuning and set up. I shimmed my washer and that pretty much took care of it. But also don't consider proper RPM just a band aid, unless you are really screaming.

Why don't you enlighten us with your set up? I am running 37g, flatops, .03 gasket, port heads. Not sure what I'll do next time. Eventually will do my other bike.

Screamin' Eagle heads (bathtub chamber), 0 deck height on cylinders, .030 head gaskets, and a Wood W6 cam.Runs the best on 87 octane fuel. Dyna 2000 ignition module set on the number 2 curve. 40mm CV carb with N65 needle with 185 main jet and a 45 pilot jet.
