Newby to working on Harleys here,,,,,,I was looking at the throttle assembly on bars and noticed the **** underside which locks down throttle when tightened,,,,what is this used for anyway? Surely it's Not some sort of caveman cruise control, right.? I'd really like to hear some input please....
It is a throttle lock, you can set the throttle on long cruises, it prvents "hand/wrist" fatigue...think of it as "cruise control" howver, unlike a car, the only discopnnect youd have is pulling in the clutch in a quick situation
It's used to set "drag" on the throttle ... the tighter you make it more effort required to twist the throttle ... set the drag to where you're comfortable with the amount of effort to twist the throttle ( in either direction ) and you're good to go ... remember that rolling off the throttle will take a bit ( minimal ) of effort to decelerate

Probably the best way to think of it IMO.
But I have locked the throttle open in places that were wide open and flat with it.
It's Harley's suicide cruise control. Considering back in 1938 and maybe newer, they did not even have a return spring on the throttle and a clutch pedal, pretty impressive. I tend to have no problem with my throttle and have never used it. Just holding on tends to lock mine. Better than that aftermarket shoehorn thing. ..
not really complaining about being caveman cruise control,,,, it's just that I haven't been near bikes since 87 and back then it was still about same technology,,, just locked throttle with thumb control and you were good,,,,,I just Woukd had thought by now somebody would have created something much better..underside lock looks a little difficult while riding anyway,,,but it is way more efficient...Time for me to put up or shutup....
