Yeh I have to keep my key in to operate the bike. I have a Lock, Lock w/ Accessories, Off, Ignition, and Accesories all as positions for the key. Bike can only turn on if in the ignition position and key cannot be removed.
Had ti finally replace my ignition switch, had the same issues. I could jiggle it just right and it would run fine but then the whole key assembly pulled out with the key. lol
I don't recall it being very expensive to replace.
Leave the switch in neck and mount a new one on the dash panel. The neck switch will still function as your fork lock. I ordered a new switch that would fit my original key so I didn't have to get another key to make the fork lock and ignition work. You can order a Wide Glide dash that already has the hole and mounts for the switch or drill yours and mount it to the tank top plate. It's so much easier to deal with than the neck location.

How were you able to ensure the new switch would fit the original key? Where did you place your order?
I replaced the switch in my FXD that was under the seat. I would lose power to the speedo and the engine would rarely but occasionally cut out. A wiggle of the key made things right but I knew it was a matter of time before it completely went out.
Very easy task if you are comfortable splicing wires. I bought one from drag. It didnt match the original key but was readily available and was much cheaper than from Harley. I seldom locked the forks but kept the original key on my key ring just in case.

I also ordered mine from a discount HD dealer...That was long ago and I think it was about$ 75.00. If you are going to use a wide glide dash then order a wide glide switch and the switch mounts to the underside of the dash panel with 4 screws. You just have to extend your wiring from the original switch about a foot. Use solder sleeves and some heat shrink and your good to go. If you don't already have them, you need to order a service and a parts manual. It's easy from there.
Try New Castle HD. I've had good luck with them.
Your key has a number on it and you order the switch to fit that number. Look under the little black rubber cap on the key.
