Default problem w/removable ignition key - help?

I am obviously new to the forums and have just recently purchased my first HD after 25 years of riding. As I understand it, the ignition key is supposed to be removable when the bike is running by turning the key back to accessory. For some reason, each time I do that with my '06 1200C, the bike quits. What am I doing wrong? As for the bike, I got a smoking deal on it at $7700 Cdn when the Canadian dollar was at $1.10 on the exchange. It was worth the 9 hour run down to Montana to grab it!

If your sporty is like my dyna, the key locks in place when in the ignition position. Accessory mode is for lights when not running.

You are not doing anything wrong. That's the way it's supposed to work. The accessory position is for just that, accessories only. The key should not come out if the bike is running. I don't keep the bike key on my main key ring for that reason. I don't want a bunch of keys flopping in the wind.

Iceman, there is nothing wrong with the ignition lock on your Sporty. The key is held in place and cannot fall out when in run position. The other poster is correct that you should not keep that key on keychian with several other keys because it swings n sways and can cause damage to ignition switch or perhaps get broken off.

JosephGarcia, my Road King uses a different setup. It has a barrel style key and it cannot be left in ignition switch because a spring pushes it back out....On the touring bikes, you use key only to lock and unlock ignition and fork lock, then you put it in your pocket.

Thats interesting, I didn't know that.

Well, at least for a sporty, the key stays in the ignition. Or at least on mine, then again it is about 20 years old..

I appreciate all the feedback. It was confusing to me as my cousins' springer does have that feature and it is something I really like as there isn't any key or key ring being buffeted around in the wind.
