Default Motorcycle shipping?

I am military and will be headed to a school for about 5 months. In theory I will have my nights and weekends free so I want to have my bike there with me. I don't ever trailer it so I don't own a trailer. I don't want to rent a trailer, haul it with me, then have nowhere to keep it and end up with no time to ride. I am thinking go down there, see if I've got time to ride and find a place to keep it when not being ridden, then have it shipped. Has anyone done this before? Any shipping company you would recommend or any you would avoid?

The bike is a 2007 Ultra Classic Electra Glide with detachable tour pack, currently looking like a SG which is how I'd ship it. It's in Louisville, KY and would be shipped to the Tucson, AZ area.

I would buy a used enclosed trailer take the bike with you and then you have storage when your not using it.

I have only shipped a motorcycle once in 40 years of riding. I sold my Kawasaki ZZR 1200 in 2011 to guy in PA. He had come out and looked at the bike and decided he wanted it. He made all the arrangements and paid for it. At 8 AM on a Mon the shipper pulled up and loaded my bike into the trailer. It was delivered from IL to PA about 9-10 hours later that night.

I have used U-Ship a couple of times. The more you pay, the faster the pickup and delivery.

Shipping in the USA is going to cost around $500.00 more or less. As someone said U-Haul 1 way maybe 150.00 and good insurance park it if it goes MIA don't worry about it.

Wow. Besides the cost of shipping my big concern would be where to keep it when you got it there. And seems you don't know at this time whether you will have much time to ride or not. Several issues there. And I hope you can find reasonable solutions to all of the issues. But if not, 5 months really isn't that long to not have your bike available.

Someone mentioned renting a U Haul motorcycle trailer. Their trailers really are nice. My neighbor rented one 2 years ago and it was like $15 or so per day--if your insurance wouldn't cover a trailer U Haul can add insurance in and I think my neighbor ended up paying like $22 per day with the U Haul insurance added in cause he didn't check with his insurance company ahead of time and he wanted to be sure he had coverage and only needed the trailer for one day. But he found out the U Haul here with those nice bike trailers will NOT rent them one way. They want them back here!

Hope you get it worked out, your neighbor, Joe.
