denim paint is not 'finicky' or even really difficult. it does however, build character as it ages. if you take a black denim bike and put it side by side with a vivid black bike, both being over a year old and used about the same, the denim bike will look better. no matter how hard you try, the vivid black is going to get a lot of micro scratches and swirls.
you just have to have realistic expectations. your denim paint is not going to look showroom new after a year. but it will still look very good.
i've had both. i have vivid black right now. if someone had denim black and wanted to trade, i'd do it in a heartbeat.
I'll add another vote for NOT using the bra. A long while back I put one on my Low Rider to keep my legs from rubbing against the tank and wearing the paint. Well, the bra fits a little loose and flaps/rubs against the paint and scratches it. Dirt also builds up under the bra as the open end is forward facing. The dirt acts as an abrasive under there. It doesn't do what you expect it to do. The 3M plastic is a much better idea.
