Still around! They do have some serious health issues though, and so far the cure sounds worse than the ailment.

The article says 200 of the 700 are jobs that are waiting to be filled. I think this a common tactic theses days with so many people retiring. Nicer than laying someone off. You may need an official lay off if union job.

Some expect HD to cut the number of bikes made the rest of the year in half and soak all the losses this year. then next year with dealer inventory down they should see a nice rebound which they can crow about.

as, use covid19 and other ceo as scapegoat and just write off the year. if they let stock dwindle a lot they can thin out their dealerships as well

Default Harley cuts 500 Jobs

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/09/...idson-layoffs/

Harley cuts 500 jobs in new restructuring plan.

How’s about they make their bikes $ 2000 bucks cheaper and no one loses their job, Bike sales go up / orders come in.

But Im guessing the little money grubbers at HD central don’t see it that way.

The problems not the bikes, Or trying to develop a market for the now movement,

It’s the outrageous price their asking for them, cos it don’t matter if you build the best motorcycle on the planet, If people can’t afford them, you go broke.

Well then, we've just heard from the latest hdforums business genius. It's posts like these that remind me of president Lincoln who said: "it's a shame that the best generals all work for the newspapers."

They are never going to get me to buy a new bike with their current marketing strategy. In their heyday they offered a standard, classic and Ultra Classic batwing. The Ultra Classic was perfect for me, and it was very popular.

Now the only 2up Tourpack Batwing is the $30k Limited. With a lot of extras I don’t want, and definitely don’t want to pay for. If I only rode single, I’d buy a Standard, but it would cost thousands to add a 2up seat, tour pack, backrest, lowers, radio and passing lamps to make it equivalent to my Ultra. I know many other riders who think like me. They don’t want an infotainment center or heated grips.

I was just talking to a former Harley executive. He said the management under Levatich didn’t understand sales, he was an engineer. The leaders only care about the stock price, buying back shares, and losing market share. That’s bad management, and the man who approved all these buybacks is now CEO and he cares more about the environment, than saving the VTwin. Keithu’s Lincoln analogy is flawed. I’m a consumer, I know what I want. And it’s not currently being offered.

Harley is managed like a sports team. Every time they get a new manager he cleans house to build his own team his way.

"I’m a consumer, I know what I want. And it’s not currently being offered."
Ding..Ding..Ding...we have a winner..!!
I'm not a manufacturing engineer, so I'm gonna ask this question in a sincere effort to learn. Could HD offer a couple or three basic frames/motor combinations... the customer uses a checklist to specify what they want on the frame they choose, the Motor company assembles the bike to the specifications the customer wants and delivers it..??
Probably waayyy too simplistic huh..?? You've got the frame/motor on the assembly line already. Seems like you should be able to "put this on", "leave that off"...without too much disruption.
Thanks.

We had something like that on cars several decades ago. Pick your options individually. Imagine the choice of 3 or 4 different radios, 5 different transmissions, etc. I assume the auto companies found it more efficient and accurate to have "popular packages". If you've ever been in a car assembly plant, you can see why it's a better system. I've never been in a Harley plant, but I would imagine it's similar.

I found this order form for a 1970 Oldsmobile. Yikes.
