FX = Superglide, there were no Softails, back then all H-Ds came with a standard type swingarm.
FX was basically a big twin (F) with an XL (Sportster) front end.
E for electric start,so FXE is an e-start Superglide.
The AMF FXE's were my motivation for choosing a Dyna Superglide. Classic, timeless and nostalgic Harley Davidson style. In some ways, the old Shovel is better bike.

With the exception of mine having the front fender tip trimmed a bit the pic above could be my '76 FXE!
When I bought mine the only color available was an ugly "beer bottle brown" which I left alone until I tipped the bike over and slightly dinged the tank and the front fender.
Amazingly, I used the identical decals on the tank ad the vivid black paint on mine. Had it until it was illegally "taken" in '81
thats the info i was lookin for.THANKS.. fl and fx use the same frame?..i understand modern times their the touring frame, softail, dyna then the sportsters..looking for parts interchangability...thanks again
They did not use the same frame. The FX was shorter in length than the FL I don't remember if it was a difference in the swingarm length or what. Bigger battery on the FL. The tank mounts were different fo the two-piece FL, and of course the front end was wider, bigger and heavier on the FL (although it was the same frame neck).
