i'm not quite sure why it's ok to use a helmet, and then in a year or so, wear the same used helmet that you've been wearing, and that is ok

but if someone else wore it for a year, and then you used it, it's not ok

heads sweat a lot and it's kinda gross, but I don't see why it's a big deal otherwise

helmets don't lose their magic when they transfer from one owner to another, do they?

Very important to leave the chin straps on.

Their training could benefit YOU, someday...

Just give 'em a call to set up a helmet transfer.
Dang, I wish I had known that. I recently donated several to the landfill.

I heard that area is littered with helmets the week after Sturgis.

Just substitute the word "underwear" for "helmet".....eeeewwwww! For the record I remove the liners regularly and wash them in a bra bag with my wife's "daintys".

Old helmets sit in the garage, except for one Shoei I bought for an ex who wore it exactly 45 seconds before she screamed for me to stop and let her off (I was going all of 20 MPH)-needless to say, that one didn't last LOL! Sold that helmet on eBay to a scooter chick from LA.

Yes, most FDs respond. Helmets may be removed after neck and back Injuries have been cleared. But, even after (or if?) a helmet is removed a "C" collar is usually put on immediately. If those injuries are questionable, then a helmet may not be removed? Every department has different procedures.

I was thinking that the OP was looking for a new crash helmet as the one he has is now aged. It might be around 5 years old, the time that Shoei recommend you change it.

If the crash helmet is only a year old and not been left out in the sun then you are probably right.

How long does it take a dash in a car to crack in hot states?

Besides being gross, you don't know if a Helmet has fallen off a shelf or a bike. Probably doesn't make a big difference, but that can fall can cause weak spots.

Default Old Helmets

Old Helmets ? I throw them in the garbage.. Couldn't bring myself to think I sold an old helmet to someone who may of gotten hurt or worst wearing it.. The couple of bucks made on it just isn't worth it.

i've heard others say that dropping, scuffing, nicking a helmet can compromise it's integrity to the point of making it unsafe as head protection

I'm not saying the people here who say this are stupid or purposely misinforming, but I respectfully question whether that is true

as well, there is absolutely no hope of me not dropping, scuffing, or nicking a helmet at some point....if it really is the case, that is super frustrating....there honestly is no hope of me keeping a helmet blemish free....i'm not going to carry it around like it's the frikken arc of the covenant....if i really believed marks made it worthless, i'd just stop wearing helmets

now....if were a helmet manufacturer with no scruples....I'd tell anyone that would listen that even a fleck of dust in the wrong place can compromise the safety of a helmet, and therefore, if the helmet ever fails.....I would have absolutely no liability

I have sold used helmets before. I went through about 5 or so, looking for the style I wanted. None were worn more than a few times. Put them up on Craigslist, some woman bought the lot of them for $200.
There are some dealers that take them in as well. SeaCoast HD in Hampton, NH takes used helmets. Not sure if they credit you or not for them, but they have a bin for them.
As to donating them to FDs, I actually ust checked with our on duty captain, and he said they dont train with them normally. Maybe bigger depts do, but, this one doesnt.
