Default Made in China

Was in a couple dealers yesterday while out on a ride and thought I might treat myself to a little Father’s Day something. Before I buy anything these days I look to see where it’s made. I walked out empty handed as anything that wasn’t motor clothes seems to be made in China. I didn’t look too hard at the apparel. Just to be clear, I wasn’t looking for parts for the bike.

I started to buy one of those man cave metal signs and looked to see where it was made. These signs had been on the wall way before this COVID thing and the country of origin was hidden by the UPC code and/or price sticker. I passed and moved on to a different sign but found it was made in China. So... no man cave sign for me.

OK, maybe a coffee cup - Nope - made in PRC.

Then it became a bit of a challenge. Pint glass set? Nope. Pull chain fob for the shop light? Nope. Wall clock? Nope. It seems much of what the MoCo sells is made in China. Yeah, I probably looked like a shoplifter At first but at the same time you could tell I was looking for the country of origin.

I know this isn’t news to many folks here. Just sharing/venting as my values to support Americans and their businesses change my choices.

While I know I can’t escape buying Chinese MoCo products or products made in China entirely, I will spend more if I have to to keep American dollars in America.

We sell China food and raw materials and they send back Christmas decorations and farkle (ya and some useful stuff too I get it) and somehow they have the advantage? Can’t figure it out.

It comes down to this: Buy PRC/ offshore products or have it custom made or build it yourself. Some things just aren't made here anymore( thankyou Wall St/ K st and traitor Congress). But theres a bright side, Navarro said the other day 2 trillion has been allocated( asked for) to bring back medical/ pharmaceutical manufacturing here to the U.S. We gotta start somewhere and that's a big chunk of change. The other option is unacceptable: live on our knees before the CCP.

I just checked the nice button down HD shirts that I have, thinking they may be made in USA as I have had them for many years. But no, made in China. I do have a old pair of HD engineer boots that were made in US.

It's sad, but not surprising. Even the current Harley-Davidson motorcycles themselves are difficult to claim as being "Made in USA". A more accurate description would be "Assembled in USA of foreign and domestic parts."

I have one, too, made in USA. About that old.

Over the weekend I fixed up an old bicycle I've had for over 30 years to give to an acquaintance. An old Columbia. Had "Made in USA" all over it - all the little sub-parts. The hubs on the wheels had it - can you imagine USA companies making all those little parts now? Sad.

Cheap toys and Dollar Store junk is one thing, Aircraft parts, high tech items that we developed and they copy, drugs we spent millions developing, military items and vital parts, software that is copied, communication items with spyware built in are different. Food items from PRC will not enter my home. Walmart is now off limits. Every item we purchase is inspected for country of origin. Taiwan is ok. PRC no good.
