I use the tap to the head as more a "Heads up" signal. Have used it for cops but I've used it for re-treads in the road, deer, broken down cars, etc. If it's cops specifically I tend to use the twirl motion (spinning lights) Guess it depends on whichever one comes to mind as I'm riding :/
Just remember, most Harley riders are on their first bike. They got it after retirement and want to be cool.
Really, most HD riders I know and that is a lot of them have been on Harley's most of their riding years. That is 50 years for me now.. 90% of the riders I see on the road acting a fool are not on Harley's.
Last week riding 28 in NC tight curves . Radar setup in the boonies. The car was some what to close to the road in a blind curve. Met a small group coming at me. And tapped the helmet. I got the impression they did not have a clue.
Was not aware of this hand signal until recenly. An approaching rider was tapping his helemt and I did not know why but I slowed down JUST BECAUSE. A mile up the road there was LEO waiting. Now I know what it means.
I had previously used the car version of flashing my high beams to both other riders and cars. Presume that was understood as well. I don't think car drivers, unless they ride, would understand the tapping the helmet sigmal.
Been used for years. Surprised at how many do not know more than a couple of the had/arm signals.
I went on a few group rides and had guys pointing at every little thing on the road as an obstacle. Also telling me when to ride single or double file etc. Got tired of it real fast and never went on another. If I can't see it, or can't judge the conditions I will quit riding. I don't want someone pointing out there is a dead bird in the road for me.
Everyone up here uses the helmet tap for popo, metrics and young riders included. They confiscate vehicles here if you are over 40kph over the limit, no one wants to see another rider waiting for the tow truck and thousands in fines.
