Would you like a junk box that slides forward and becomes your back rest ?
I was looking at ultra today and was thinking . Wouldn’t it be nice if you could hit a button and the upper junk box with that nice comfortable rear passenger back rest would move forward to the drivers back . And when your turn the bike off , it would go back to its original position so you can get off the bike .

No, not really. If I were to go down I don't want to be trapped on the bike. I would like the option of being able to get away from the bike if need be and a backrest can make that difficult.
I had a Corbin saddle on my fxr that had an easily removable backrest. I liked having that on long rides. On my Switchback I have some HD luggage that includes a backpad. I like the support for long rides and if HD would do as the OP suggests, I think it would be liked.
I have to say a back rest makes a difference, never thought so until I put a Mustang Super Touring seat with removable backrest on the Road glide. On long solo trips on my Wideglide I used to just turned my bag around and it served as a back rest but on day trips I had no back rest and didnt thing it was that big of a deal. Now when I ride the Wideglide on day trips I miss the backrest that I have on my Roadglide

I’ve had backrests on bikes for ten years at least. And some when traveling, I have used duffle bag as a rest. How is a back rest going to trap me on my bike? Honest question, I’d like to know your thoughts
I like my back rest. A lot of guys traveling will strap luggage to the pillion seat and lean back on it. I test rode an ultra with the tour pack moved forward. I didn't like it at all as it restricted me from leaning to the side.

a traditional backrest is quite a bit different than the backrest on the king tour pack with the extended side arms. if i was to go the op route, i would use the chopped backrest pad. in fact, that is what i do. minus the button, and changing the positions. when we go on road trips, i put my chopped tour pack on, with backrest pad, in the solo position and use it for a backrest. when we get to our destination, off it comes.
