Update... he was sitting at a stop light and the woman driving the minivan didn't stop.
Damn! I was just starting to feel like I was being paranoid watching my rear view while in first gear at stoplights. Reports like this are terrible news, but they might just save a life. Hope your pal recovers quickly.
Found out later this afternoon it could have been MUCH MUCH worse. Apparently when she hit him he flew off the bike into the rear window of the car in front of him. Didn't go thru the window, kind of smashed into it.
I am happy he survived this. Thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery.
Here is my advice:
1. He should get that knee looked at ASAP if he hasn't already. Although his knee may have suffered the worst injury, he should have a general physical exam to look for any ancillary injuries. Flying into a windshield is not a benign circumstance. Any delay in a medical exam will give the impression that his injuries are less severe.
2. I would hire a lawyer. It is not so much for the bike but his injuries. There may be long term consequences to his injuries that go beyond healing. They would also look into why she was inattentive. Could it be she was on her phone? Phone records would help determine that.
There was an LEO going the other way when this happened, he was on the scene almost immediately from what my co-worker told me. He was taken by ambulance from the scene and I assume given a thorough going over at the hospital ER who then released him. I asked him if the driver was texting, he said he didn't know anything about that when we 'spoke' thru e-mail.
I have no doubt he will lawyer up asap, if he hasn't already.
