Interesting that these have been around for so long - I've been riding for longer than I'm willing to admit and have only recently noticed them... I guess I need to pay attention!
why is it illegal? I doesn't look very dangerous....do these harm or hurt more than they seem they would?
If I understand correctly, there is a 1 inch steel bearing/ball inside of the monkey fist, depending where you live it could be considered a blackjack of sorts. Some places have ordinances on these devices, just like kubotan's etc.

The way I see it, and the way it has worked for me, is it's an "attention getter". By "nature" we have all been "programmed" to notice things "moving" in our peripheral vision, and automatically turn to look and see what it is that's "moving". This causes cagers to actually turn and see me there, even if I'm in their blind spot, because this whip moving around out there flashes in their mirror, and causes them to look more. It has kept several people from moving into me or into my lane, so I'm going to keep it on my bike, no matter what any of you say.
And, yes, PLEASE be careful about the colors you have in it. I've heard of certain clubs having issues pertaining to that here causing confrontations, so I'll either just keep it all black or brown to avoid that.
