Handlebar leash thing??
I've recently started riding again after a few years away, and I'm seeing a lot of bikes with some sort of braided leash thing attached to one of the bar ends. Seems like it's usually throttle side, but not always. Some of them are long enough to drag the ground in a turn. Looks like a safety hazard to me... Can anyone tell me what these are for?

Those whips were purely designed to swing at something or someone with an intent to do damage. Over the years posers started copying them purely as design. In the old days you'd see most bikers with a bandana sticking out of their back pocket. Tied to the end was a padlock they could easily describe as a fork or disc lock for their bike to any inquiring police officer. But really they were a weapon. As far as I'm concerned, getting close enough to a vehicle of any size to strike it as a "get back" warning is just stupid. Like the guy that tried to tell me he got rid of tailgaters by moving over and slowing down enough to pull alongside and stick his hunting knife in their fender or hood. Riiiight. Stupid!
