Default Tips on buying a used S&S motor?

I bought a fxr project and I spotted a 100" S&S for cheap. I've never purchased a motor by itself. What do I look for to make sure I'm not getting ripped off?

Make sure it will fit your application.
FXR primaries are different.

i would want to know where the rest of the bike is. did he swap it out for another motor. what's the mileage on it,do they have any service records? what happens when you install it and the bearings are shot or other internal problems show up. or are you buying it to rebuild it?

proof of ownership would be a must for me

First step...I'd meet the guy, listen to him and judge the book by the cover.

I had an S&S 100" square motor. The first one walked a wrist pin keeper out and then the wrist pin worked its way out into the cylinder wall. they covered it under warranty. i could contact S&S and give them the ID # off of the motor and ask them if they have any issues with this particular motor or if a certain series of motor has issues. that could give you at least a little piece of mind.
