I've had both, and the simple answer is: if you're doing simple things, like a stage 1, the FP3 is a fantastic device and extremely user-friendly.
But if you're ever planning on getting your bike professionally dyno tuned, the FP3 is the wrong way to go. Very few if any professional tuners use it, whereas the TTS and especially the PowerVision are ubiquitous in good dyno tuner shops.
FP3 for the DIY guy, PV for working with pros, getting your engine built, going big-bore, etc.
^^^This. FP3 is a fine little tool. But the PV is more robust. And there will be many more custom maps with the PV. You can buy a new license & take it to the next bike also. FP3 is one bike & done.
I just spend some time on YouTube watching videos about S&S Cam replacement. Now I want a damn Cam upgrade. I really have to get off this forum....lol
Looks like PV it is, since I will most likely be doing Cam upgrade at some point. It's too good of an upgrade not to do it. Plus, it will allow me to replace all the subpar parts from HD and upgrade them to something better. This will be an interesting project for me. Never went that deep into motorcycle engine. But there is enough resources out there that I feel confident that I will be able to pull it off.
But before all that, I will upgrade the headers to match the slip-ons.
For sure.. for sure. Man, the cam swap really make the bike sound freaking amazing! The only iffy part for me would be taking out the pushrods. For some odd reason, it looks scary to me. But damn, if I did cam upgrade, I would also swap the pushrods and tappet covers to black ones.
PVs on sale for 384. With fuelmoto until March. And I believe free shipping. Use promo code freeze21
(and remember with FM lifetime support and map upgrades)
The FP3 is perfectly capable of handling a Stage 2. Ive been running one on my 14 Limited for years and it runs great. There are plenty of cams, air intakes and exhausts to choose from to match your setup. If not, contact V&H and they will download one to your FP3. Their customer service is outstanding.
That said, if you plan on going further with upgrades, the PV is the only way to go.

Well, that makes it even easier! I placed an order. Can't beat the price. $384 shipped. Thanks for the heads-up about the promo code! They ask what you currently run on your bike during the checkout process.
I think I am done for a while. Does this ever stop?
I started my Stage 2 in the fall , just ordered my exhaust system . I've been running my bike with the FP3 , which has done a great job for the past 3 years . I'm looking forward to seeing how the FP3 will handle the new cam upgrade , if it doesn't perform , I'll order the PV and go from there .

No.
I just bought my SG three(ish) weeks ago. BTW I LOVE the M8 engine. LOVE IT! I have already replaced the seat and should be getting my new KST 12" bars today and I'll work on that tonight. For now, I am more than happy with the engine, but when the time comes, and it will, I'll buy the license and use my PV on the new AND old bikes. The fact you even considered the cam swap, you did good getting the PV I think.
Side note, and only because I've been curious; what headers would you be using? The heads on the M8 are new and it seems that most aftermarket headers kill the low end torque.

I hope you have better luck with the FP3 than I had when I went with the Stage 2 S&S 475 cam. V&H sent out 2 or 3 different maps and I was never really satisfied so took it and had it Dyno Tuned. I couldn't find a Dyno that wanted to work with an FP3 so just paid for the Dynojet license and had it tuned. Couldn't be happier with the way it runs now. Good Luck.
