Went down HARD today.
90% of the timeit's because the rider jammed too much front brake, or locked up the rear brake.
And yes, I did find an expansion joint that I hit.
Three posts, something on yer mind??
If it is the guy I think it is then him and I have nothing to discuss, since I never am sure what he wants me to do about the problem now.

I know this doesn't help in your situation after the fact, but I'm willing to bet that the outcome would have been a little more favorable if this was an ABS-equipped bike.

Wow. That was pretty intense. Glad to see you made it out. Good description too, felt like I was along for the ride. From what you wrote, something like "lightly hit the brakes, then downshifted, then suddenly the rear lost control," I think the problem came when you downshifted just as you hit the oil slick, introducing higher amounts of rear wheel torque on a road surface with less traction. Downshifting is capable of destabilizing the rear too, so make sure everything is smooth and easy going down from one gear to the next.
I'd also recomend trying to give yourself more room between you and the car in front of you if possible,I know there's always some tool that will cut in but distance is your friend in a situation.
Overfilled fuel tanks is the most common cause of slick road film like you were on,especially diesel nowadays since there's so many diesel pickups out there and diesel doesn't evaporate quickly like gas.
I had a very close call recently on my morning ride to work from the same thing,50 mph corner and my big old EG Classic started to drift and wobble,I've been around the same corner every day going to work for 20+ years so it wasn't my speed.
Some how I kept it from going down till I hit the gravel shoulder just at the end of the corner and clamped on both brakes skidding to a stop just on the edge of the bar ditch.
I was lucky as hell, butt puckering experience for sure.
It was the closest call I've had with going down in 150,000 + miles on Electraglides, all because some tool had to top off his tank to the filler neck.[:@]
