After some practice it becomes second nature. Once you develop the muscle memory you'll love the heel toe shifter.

Yep, muscle memory. I need the automatic response in a tight, without thinking of what to do.

To me the process was a bit awkward until I finally figured out exactly how long my shifter levers (both) needed to be, and how I had them positioned in relation to the boards. I dislike having to lift my heel more than 1/2" to 1", so my heel unit's peg sits behind the board and barely above it. Slightly lift my heel and slide boot back over the peg. Rock my boot using the rear of the board as a fulcrum of sorts. The heel peg is lower than the board when actual gear change happens.
