Heel shifter here. I wear size 13-14 so I installed a 1.5 extended heel shift lever from softbrake to free up the available real estate on the floorboards.
I think if you have a heel shift lever one should learn to use it. But if you don't want to learn or use the heel shift lever just take it off and upshift and downshift with the toe.
Cheers
I always take the heel shifter off of my bikes, just don't care for it. The other thing about heel shifters is you tend to stomp on them and that will cause problems.
Once you get the hang of heel and toe, you'll never go back.
Or at least want to. If you came from toe only, it at first seems *** backwards. In a few days, it's great.
I grew up and learned on bikes that were toe shifters-only. Getting my first H-D and using the heel shifter was awkward at first but I've grown to prefer it. I'm a lazy rider and I also want ALL my footboard available. I installed toe and heel extended shift levers from Softbrake. The heel shifter is adjusted so I simply drift my boot heel over the back edge of the board and rock my foot. The heel peg is basically on the same level as the board. My toe unit is extended (and lowered) forward to give maximum board space. It takes almost no effort to get on it and downshift quickly. I'm so vain....I prefer no scars on my boot tops. Plus...and more truthfully...there's just something very Harley-esque about heel-toe shifting for me.
