Default Cracked cam cover, has anyone ever seen this?

It was cold this morning, 19 degrees. Warmed the bike up for a bit ( evidently not long enough) and rode out for work. Got about a 1/2 mile from home and heard a pop and maybe felt a studder. Rode another block and began smelling oil burning so I pulled over. See this crack a oil spewing out. Rode it back home, got the truck and drove to work. Haven’t had a chance to look at it. I’m hoping it just cracked from the cold and not something worse. Has anyone seen this?

Wow. Never seen that. It is only a cover, no pressure exerted on it at all.

I'm going with "something let loose inside."

I fear that but then wonder what could have “let loose” behind the cam cover and the bike still be able to run? If the tensioner, chain or gear broke the bike would have been dead right then and there.

I’ll update what I find.

I have never seen that. But I did notice the crack lines up with the bolt hole on the cam cover plate.

Side note, glad you caught it in time, oil dripping on rear tire, could have been nasty!

Has anyone done any previous work in the cam chest? Are those black pushrod tube covers or is that just an optical illusion?

How cold was it in Chicago this morning? Even though I have ridden mine in below freezing temps, maybe that had something to do with it?

yes, Dave Mackie cams and SE pushrods done by the previous Owner 5 years ago. I haven’t been in the cam chest since I bought it.

From where the crack originates by the bolt, I'm thinking that the bolt was too tight and there was a weak spot in the cover. Then with the cold it was a perfect storm and it cracked.

Hoping it's just the cover for you.

Cold! Lol. It was 19 degrees F when I left. Warmed the bike up for a few minutes but I always try to avoid warming it too long because I don’t want to wake the neighbors at 515am.
